Detail: Jean-Luc Ponty, a pioneer and undisputed master of violin in the area of jazz and rock, brings his unique visionary spin to Phoenix for an 8:00 p.m. performance at The Compound Grill Wednesday, November 11. Widely regarded as an innovator who has expanded the vocabulary of modern music, Jean-Luc has been described as the "most important jazz violinist since Stéphane Grappelli" by the Los Angeles Times. Thanks to his revolutionary style on the violin he has collaborated with some of the best European and American jazz musicians: Eddy Louiss, Daniel Humair, Niels-Henning-Ørsted Pedersen, Wolfgang Dauner, Eberhard Weber, John Lewis, Tony Williams, Lalo Schifrin, Quincy Jones and George Duke.
Ponty was the first bebop violinist and pioneered use of the electric violin attracting the attention of pop and rock musicians. He collaborated on several tours and recordings with Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention and John McLaughlin’s Mahavishnu Orchestra and has recorded with Elton John. In the mid 70’s Jean-Luc became one of the most prominent figures of the jazz-rock movement in the USA, reaching the top of the U.S. charts. Critics have acclaimed his most recent band album “The Atacama Experience” as one of his best since “Enigmatic Ocean”.
